Mañana de Puertas Abiertas del Huerto

Hoy abrimos las puertas del Huerto Escolar para los padres del colé para que vengan a mirar lo que hemos hecho con los niños este curso y a ver si se animan a ayudar para el proximo!

Today we opened the School Vegetable Garden's doors to the Parents to show them what we've done with the kids this year and to see if they'd like to help next year!

Les preparamos te de menta (del huerto claro!) y unas berenjenas con miel de caña deliciosas que las cocineras habian preparado.

We prepared minte tea (from the garden of course!) and the kitchen chefs carefully prepared some delicious aubergines with golden syrup.

 

Bajó una clase de niños de 5 años para trabajar con nosotros.

The 5 year olds came down to work with us too.

Algunos padres dedicados se quedaron hasta el final!
Some dedicated parents stayed until the end!

III Encuentro de la Red de Educar Madrid

 

Hoy fue el tercer Encuentro de la Red de Educar Hoy por un Madrid mas Sostenible y fuimos dos padres al MediaLab Prado para compartir nuestro proyecto y conocer lo que hacen los demás.

Today was the third meeting between the Sustainable Madrid Education Network and two parents went to the Prado MediaLab to share our project and to know what the other schools were doing.

 

Hemos aprendido un montón como trabajan los otros centros, compartimos problemas y buscamos juntos soluciones y elaboramos ideas que nos servirán mucho el proximo curso. 

We learned how other schools work, sharing problems and finding solutions together, creating ideas which will be beneficial for next term.

Nos encanto ver el entusiasmo de los niños y profes, contestando las preguntas sobre sus proyectos en la expocision y trataremos de aplicar algunos. Por ejemplo, una casa de mariquitas hechoa con unos tablones de madera con capas de hojas secas entre ellos atraen mariquitas al huerto que se comen los pulgones.

We loved seeing the kids' and teachers' enthusiasm, answering questions about their projects in the exhibitions and we'll try to use some of them ourselves. For example, the ladybird house made with little planks of wood layered with dry leaves to attract ladybirds to the vegetable garden who eat the aphids.

Tambien nos encanto la idea de los alumnos de escribir cartas a los padres explicando porque es bueno reciclar y que han aprendido en el cole y como se deberia aplicar el reciclaje en casa tambien.

We also loved the idea of the students writing letters to their parents explaining why it's good to recycle and what they've learned at school and how they can recycle at home too.

Tuvimos suerte pasando por el Jardin Vertical al lado del MediaLab y CaixaForum que estaban instalando las plantas. Hicieron huecos en la tierra-tela, pusieron las plantas y los grapaban!

We passed the vertical garden by MediaLab and CaixaForum while they were adding the plants. They made holes in the soil-material, pushed the plants in and stapled them in!

Taller Pesticidio Natural

Hoy nos vino a visitar Guillermo, un experto del huerto, para explicarnos como se hace una pesticida natural. Los pulgones pueden comer los productos del huerto y como puedes ver, cuando vienen, hay muchos! Mira estas hojas de habas! 

Today we were visited by Guillermo, a vegetable garden expert, to explain how to make a natural pesticide. Aphids can eat our vegetables and as you can see, there are lots! Look at this Beanstalk!

Es mejor no matarlos con pesticidas químicas - no hace bien a la planta y además no queremos comer químicos yuk! Mejor usar métodos naturales para evitar plagas de bichos.
It's better not to kill them with chemical pesticides - they harm the plants and we don't want to eat chemicals yuk! It's better to use natural methods to avoid plagues of bugs.

Guillermo nos enseño cómo elaborar una infusión de ajos para ahuyentar los pulgones que pueden venir al huerto.

Guillermo showed us how to make a Garlic infusions to deter the aphids than come to the garden.

Necesitas:
1 litro de agua
5 dientes de ajo
Un cazuela mediana
Un trapo
Un spray

1. Pon los dientes de ajo con el agua en una cazuela tapadita con un trapo por 24 horas
2. El próximo día, pon a hervir la cazuela 5 minutos y deja que se enfría

3. Colar la infusión para quitar los ajos y se deja el agua de ajo

4. Pon la infusión en una botella de spray y usarla para ahuyentar los pulgones.

No los mata solo los asustan!
It doesn't kill them, only scares them!

 

Habas 

También hemos empezado a quitar las habas que ya casi se han terminado y nuestro portero que elaboró la estructura ya lo quito y hemos recogido las habas que quedaban con una ayuda de alumnas de quinto que pasaban en su recreo!

We also started to take down the beans because they've almost finished and our caretaker who built the structure has taken that down and we collected which beans were left with the help of some pupils from 5th grade who were passing at break time!

Compostage

También, recogimos los residuos de la cocina y los echamos encima de la compostera seguido por una capa de materia seca, esta vez, periódico en trozos y un poco de tierra. Sacamos unas mala hierbas para cuidar del huerto y los dejamos en el sol para que se sequen para la próxima vez!
We also put last week's kitchen scraps in the composter followed by a dry layer, this time, ripped up newspaper and a bit of garden soil. We left some of the weeds out to dry in the sun to use next time!

Sacando Lechugas y Plantando Plantones

Sacando Lechugas

Hoy sacamos las lechugas ya listas con los niños de cuarto de Primaria y salieron muy bien! Luego se los llevaron a casa para ayudar preparar una rica ensalada.  

Today we pulled out the lettuce with children from year Four and they came out really well! Later, the kids took them home to prepare a delicious salad. 

 

Con las maceteros recién vacíos, quitamos unas pequeñas malahierbas, regamos, y listo para otro producto! (NB. Es mejor dejar que la tierra se descanse un poco!)
With the flowerpots emptied we removed some small weeds, watered it and it's ready for another product! (NB It's better to leave the soil to rest a bit!)


Plantando Plantones

Los semilleros que hemos preparado con los 4A de infantil durante el Dia de la Tierra ya están llenos de plantones listos para plantar! 

Our seed trays that we prepared with the 4A reception class during Earth Day are now full of seedlings ready to plant!

Los niños trabajaron duro moviendo la tierra, preparándola, aplanándola, y contando los plantones.

The kids worked hard digging the soil deep, preparing it by taking out weeds, playing with the worms, flattening the soil and counting the seedlings.

 

Habían tres tipos: Rabanos, Calabazas y Habas con aproximativamente 20 de cada uno. Entonces los niños muy listos, con las palas dibujaron 5 líneas en la tierra y con la manija de la pala hicieron 4 hoyos en cada uno.

There were three types: Raddishes, Squash and Runner Beans with approximately 20 of each. The smart kids drew 5 lines in the soil and with the handle of the trowel dug 4 holes in each one.

Los plantones fueron cuidadosamente plantados, firmes en la tierra y regados. Muchos niños preferían usar sus manos que los guantes del huerto! A ver como van creciendo!

The seedlings were carefully planted, firmly into the soil and watered. Lots of children prefered to use their hands! Let's see how they grow!

Echamos los restos en la compostera y le pusimos tapa.
We put the rest in the composter and added a lid.

Los Tomates han crecido tanto que los sostenimos con palos para que les llegue mas luz, y lugar para crecer. Ha salido un tomate muy bonito!
The tomatoes have grown so much that we hold them up with sticks so they receive more light and space to grow. Look at the our first lovely Tomato!

Las Remolachas estan creciendo muy fuertes, estaran listos a la vuelta de las vacaciones

The beetroot are growing nice and strong, they'll be ready after the summer holidays.

Las Berenjenas no enseñan ningun flor o fruta pero siguen creciendo bien y las hojas estan sanas.
The aubergines aren't showing any signs of fruit or flowers but they keep growing well and the leaves are healthy.

Los ajos siguen muy fuertes, pero les faltan mas tiempo. Sacamos las malahierbas y se han puesto contentos y mas derechos.

The Garlic are growing strong, but need more time. We took out the weeds and they became happier and straighter.

Las habas estan a su punto maximo, han dado muchos frutos que en mayoria los ninos han aprendido como estan de adentro y algunos se han llevado a casa para preparar con su cena.
The runner beans are at their best, they've given many beans which mostly have been showing the children what's inside, but many have gone home with the kids to prepare at home for dinner.

Compostage 3. Doce Bolsas de Residuous de la cocina escolar

Hoy fue una labor inmensa con la compostera!
Today we laboured hard over the compost heap!

Habíamos pedido guardar todos los residuos posibles de la cocina y nos guardaron 12 bolsas de cascaras de patata, pimientos, peras, huevos y lechuga !
We had asked the kitchen to save as many kitchen leftovers as possibe (no meat, fish or oils) and they saved us 12 bags full of potato peel, peppers, pear, eggshells and lettuce!

Los niños pusieron sus manos a la obra y echaron todo todo todo en la compostera.
The children got stuck in and made sure it all went into the compost heap.

Lo cubrimos con una capa gruesa de hierba seca un alumno nos dio de Valdemanco, y aseguramos que no cayera la comida! Lo regaremos tres veces a la semana como el resto del huerto.
We covered it with a thick layer of hay a pupil gave us from Valdemanco and all ready! We'll water it three times a week with the rest of the garden.

We washed the gloves ready for the next huerto adventure!
